Q. Lewis, what are the basics of game theory? Do you need to be an economist or statistician to understand it?

A. I am not an economist, a statistician, or a mathematician. Like most people, I’m just attempting to live the best life I can. It is gamer psychology, influenced by work of John von Neumann and those that followed him that has created a magnificent integrated web of life; nature, human interactions, and mathematical logic, and has enabled me to be more effective, efficient, precise, productive, and self-aware in ways I never could have imagined.

Through game theory, and gamer thinking anyone with the intelligence of an average12-year-old can live a life of love, kindness, compassion, empathy, wisdom, collaboration, and financial freedom.

To make the process of understanding this new way of thinking easier we need to explore the many ideas core to game-based thinking in short “bite-sized” pieces.

With patience, clarity of thought, and a desire for personal growth anyone can understand these ideas, and ways to simply apply them to daily living in the digital age.

Through applied game theory we can learn how an individual’s concerns may truly extend beyond their specific personal interests and serve others of common interest as well.

Most of what we can learn from game theory can be absorbed intuitively by observing skilled players engaged in games, puzzles, and game-based thinking.

Classical game theory assumes that the people making decisions will always understand the consequences of their choices, are selfish (will choose whatever option gets them the most benefit), and rational (will always choose the best option available once all things are considered).

Originally, game theory addressed win/lose games (zero-sum games), in which one person’s gains result in losses for the other participants. Today, game theory applies to a wide range of behavioral relations and is now an umbrella term for the science of logical decision making in humans, animals, and computers. These life strategies can be applied to human interactions related to business, politics, spirituality, competition, sports, relationships, and even interactions with nonhuman players including even plants.

From the Game Theory Glossary

Cobra effect: Occurs when an attempted solution to a problem makes the problem worse, as a type of unintended consequences. The term is used to illustrate the causes of incorrect stimulation in economy, politics, and many other zero-sum; win-lose, and non-zero-sum; win-win interactions.
